Role Description
Senior Networking & Telecommunications Engineer (Hospitality Sector Focus)
Are you a highly skilled Senior Networking & Telecommunications Engineer looking for your next challenge?
Our client is a well-established Managed Service Provider (MSP) based in Milton Keynes, UK, and we’re on the lookout for someone like you to join our dedicated team.
This is a hands-on technical role where you’ll be pivotal in delivering and supporting critical network and systems infrastructure within the demanding hospitality technology sector.
An understanding of 24/7/365 business operations and their unique needs is definitely a plus.
You’ll be involved in all phases of projects, from initial design through to ongoing support. You will need to work both independently and as part of a project team.
Expect a good mix of on-site, with some overnight stays required as or when needs must, as well as participation in our out-of-hours support rota.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Wireless and Internet Systems: Designing, implementing, and maintaining high-performance guest Wi-Fi and internet solutions. This includes conducting detailed predictive and post-deployment site surveys, deploying enterprise-grade Access Points (Ruckus, Aruba, Cisco Meraki), and configuring their associated controllers or cloud platforms to guarantee robust, high-density wireless coverage.
- Telecommunications Solutions: Deploying and supporting IP telephony and Unified Communications (UC) systems. You’ll be working extensively with Mitel MiVoice Business (3300 series) and 3CX Phone Systems, including all aspects of dial plan configuration, SIP trunking (mostly Gamma SIP), and integrating with other client systems.
- Network Infrastructure: Configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining core network devices from vendors like Cisco (IOS, Meraki), Fortinet (FortiGate), and Ubiquiti. This involves supporting and managing VLANs, routing protocols (OSPF, BGP), ACLs, and ensuring secure LAN-WAN connectivity and robust VPN tunnels (IPsec, SSL VPN).
- Virtualisation: Administering and supporting our virtualised environments, primarily built on VMware ESXi and vSphere, which host our critical telecommunications and application servers.
- Network Security: Implementing and managing comprehensive network security policies, including Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS), firewall rules and content filtering.
- Technical Support & Escalation: Acting as a senior escalation point for complex technical issues, providing support to colleagues, and directly to clients via helpdesk, remote access, and essential on-site visits. This includes deep-diving into network performance problems, VoIP quality issues (QoS), and system outages.
- Client & Vendor Engagement: Directly interacting with clients, vendors, and other third parties to understand technical requirements, provide updates, and ensure satisfaction with deployed solutions.
- Mentorship: Providing crucial guidance and technical assistance to junior engineers within the team, sharing your knowledge, and actively fostering a supportive team environment.
- Travel: Regular travel to client sites across the UK, Ireland, and potentially Europe in the longer term is required. A valid UK driving license is mandatory. A company car or mileage allowance will be provided subject to company policy terms.
Your Profile – Does This Sound Like You?
You’re a seasoned Networking & Telecommunications Engineer with 10 to 15 years of solid, multi-technology experience, with a significant portion gained within an MSP or similar multi-client environment.
Your track record clearly demonstrates a strong focus on network infrastructure and telecommunications.
Your career likely began in general IT or networking support, progressing steadily through roles like Network Analyst, Network System Engineer, and Senior Network Engineer. Perhaps you’ve even held positions like Technical Manager or Pre-Delivery Project Engineer, where you’ve been a go-to expert for complex technical challenges.
You’re renowned for your ability to walk into any situation, quickly diagnose intricate network or voice issues, and deliver effective solutions. Troubleshooting and fault finding aren’t just skills for you; they’re second nature.
Technically, your expertise is comprehensive:
- Mitel MiVoice Business (v7.0+) isn’t just a certification; you’ve deployed, configured, and expertly troubleshooted it in real-world, high-stakes scenarios. You understand the architecture of 3300 controllers and how to ensure their resilience. MiCollab and Mitel Border Gateway are terms and solutions you are familar with or have touched and worked on recently.
- You’re equally comfortable with 3CX Phone Systems, whether hosted on-premise or in the cloud.
- You’ve a strong grasp of SIP trunking, particularly with Gamma SIP, and intimately understand VoIP QoS behaviours, needs and nuances.
- When it comes to Wi-Fi, your knowledge extends far beyond basic setups. You have extensive experience with Ruckus (Unleashed/ZoneDirector/SmartZone), Aruba (Central/Instant), and Cisco Meraki (MR series), including conducting RF surveys and engineering robust solutions for high-density environments.
- Your Cisco skills are robust; you’re proficient with IOS and Meraki MX/MS/MR devices, and deeply understand core networking principles like VLANs, OSPF, BGP, and ACLs.
- Firewalls are familiar territory; you’re adept at managing network security, VPNs (IPsec, SSL VPN), and intrusion prevention.
- You consistently manage VMware ESXi and vSphere environments, hosting critical applications and UC systems.
- You possess a solid understanding of structured cabling, recognising its fundamental role in reliable network performance.
You thrive on the challenge of solving problems remotely, but you’re equally adept and comfortable on-site with clients, representing the company with professionalism. You excel at explaining complex technical concepts clearly to all levels of users, including non-technical stakeholders.
You understand the commitment of out-of-hours support and that regular travel to client sites across the UK and beyond is integral to delivering exceptional service.
Crucially, you’ve reached a point where you genuinely enjoy mentoring junior engineers, sharing your vast practical knowledge to help them develop. You’ve likely provided informal or formal technical leadership within teams previously.
